This past weekend the Broncos traveled to California to play Stanford University, San Jose State and University of California.
Friday night's game versus Stanford the Broncos came out strong. Playing aggressive and scoring the first three goals before penalties slowed the Broncos down. The penalties allowed the Cardinal to get back into the game and eventually go ahead 4-3 with five and a half minutes to go into the game. It was at this point a light switch was turned on stay out of the box and maybe we can win this game. They did just that. John Hildreath scored the tying goal and the game ended in a tie at the end of regulation forcing an overtime. Neither team could score but it was definite the the advantage had swung back in the Broncos favor out shooting the Cardinal 6-1. Next came the Shootout. Kevin Costello, Rusty Costello and Jared Hergesheimer scored in succession and Will Gagnon allowed just one out of three shots. Broncos 5 Stanford 4
Saturday nights game was a tale of two games. Playing against the 8 ranked team the Broncos came out again strong. But over aggressiveness led to some mistakes that led to two goals by San Jose. But Broncos kept the pressure up frustrating into errant passes and miscues. The game was begining to resemble the earlier U of I game.
Jared Hergeshimer started the Broncos scoring with a shorthanded goal less than one minute into the second period, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Keeping the pressure up and playing physical Kept the Broncos in the game with the Broncos Eric Haskins scoring on an exchange of goals end the second period with the Broncos being down 4-2.
San Jose scored the next goal three minutes into the third period taking a 5-2 with seventeen minutes to go in the game, but the Broncos were not done yet. The forwards calmed down and the defense pounded the Spartans into turnovers and mistakes. Dan Beaudrea was solid in the net stopping any shot coming his way. Devon Harris scored at the nine min mark on a Pass from Matt Heady off a rebound shot. Devon Harris scored again with a minute and thirty eight seconds off a rebound and set the table for for final minute and thirty seconds. Pulling the Goalie the Broncos continued to apply the pressure. The only way San Jose was able to get the puck out of the zone was to ice it. The Broncos did get the puck into the net with .04 sec left in the game but it was to no avail. Magically the net had come off, No Goal and the game ended in a 5 - 4 loss.
